Over the past few
months the Vocation Chalice Program here at Our Lady Star of the Sea has been very successful.
However, we are still in need of additional participants.
The purpose of the
program is to provide a focal point for prayer for vocations. We are all aware
of the need for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate and religious life. The
Second Vatican Council instructs us that it is the job of the laity to pray for and raise up vocations.
Each week at the
Sunday 5 PM LIFE TEEN Mass (other Masses will be added as the program progresses),
the celebrant will call forth the person(s) returning the chalice from the previous week and the person(s) who will be receiving
the chalice to take home for the up-coming week (this is usually done just before the consecration – but could vary) They will receive a blessing and take the chalice home, putting it in a place of honor
(most likely, the dining room table). Each day for a week, during prayer time
(morning, bedtime or at meals), they will pray for an increase and perseverance of vocations. A prayer booklet with suggested prayers will accompany the chalice. Also there will be a prayer journal that each week the individual,
family or couple that has the chalice will enter a thought, a prayer or scripture verse.
Over time this diary will become a spiritual journal for the parish. The Vocation Chalice may be displayed only at the home of the designated parishioner and
must be handled with care and the utmost respect.
Everyone is invited
to participate – families, couples and individuals.
There is a sign-up
book in the Narthex for you to sign up for a particular week to take this chalice
home and return it the following week. This is only a commitment of two weekends
at the 5 PM Mass.
